Mid-Century Entryway Ideas: Benches, Storage & Styling

Mid-Century Entryway Ideas: Benches, Storage & Styling

The entryway is the first thing you see coming home and the last thing you touch on the way out – and usually the smallest, hardest-working space in the house. Get it right and the whole home feels calmer. The piece that does the most work here is a bench: somewhere to sit and put your shoes on, with storage underneath for the shoes themselves. Here are real mid-century entryways – in homes from Germany to the US – and the ideas you can borrow from each.

Start with the bench

A good entryway bench earns its place three times over: a seat for putting shoes on, open shelves below for storing them, and a surface on top for a plant, a tray or a lamp. Because it sits low and on a slim frame, it holds all that without crowding a narrow hall. Our benches are made to order in birch plywood, so the width is built to your space – see the full range in the mid-century bench collection, or our entryway & shoe bench buyer's guide for sizing and configurations.

Find your style

The same honest birch bench reads completely differently depending on what you put around it. Five real homes, five directions:

Bright & natural

Keep the bench in a pale natural finish, add round wall hooks for bags, and let the morning light and a plant do the rest. Shoes line up underneath; a tote hangs ready by the door.

Contemporary & black

For a sharper, more modern look, go for the bench in a black finish against a wood-slat wall and a sculptural mirror. A single textured cushion softens it; boots and trainers sit below.

Boho & textured

Lean into natural texture: a macramé hanging, woven baskets on the lower shelf for the clutter you'd rather not see, a big leafy plant. The bench grounds it all in warm wood.

Classic & narrow

In a period hallway with mouldings and parquet, the slim bench tucks against the wall below a piece of art, leaving the corridor clear. Proof that mid-century sits happily in an older home.

Colour & glam

And if you want the entryway to make a statement: deep teal walls, a round gold mirror, one oversized plant in a coloured pot on the bench (our opening image). A small space is the perfect place to be bold.

Layer in the storage

The bench does the heavy lifting; a few additions finish the job:

  • Shoes below – the open lower shelf is sized for everyday pairs, lined up and off the floor.
  • Baskets – slide one onto the lower shelf for gloves, leads, odds and ends you'd rather hide.
  • Hooks above – a row of wall hooks for coats, bags and keys keeps everything by the door.
  • A tray on top – a catch-all for keys, sunglasses and the post.

The finishing touches

Three things turn a functional corner into one you actually like walking into: a mirror (a last check on the way out, and it bounces light into a dark hall), a plant for life, and a warm lamp or a pale rug to soften the hard surfaces of a doorway. Pair the bench with a stool if you need a second perch.

Why birch plywood for an entryway

The entryway is the most abused room in the house – wet shoes, dropped bags, daily traffic. Birch plywood takes it: the cross-laminated structure stays flat and rigid under the weight of a seated adult and a shelf of shoes, the exposed layered edge is an honest detail rather than a foil that chips at the first knock, and the hand-oiled finish wipes clean. It's made to order in our Poznań workshop, flat-packs, and moves house with you. (More on the material in our guide to what furniture is made of plywood.)

FAQ

What furniture do I need in an entryway?

At minimum, somewhere to sit and store shoes – a bench with a lower shelf does both. Add hooks for coats and bags, a mirror, and a small tray for keys, and the entryway is complete.

What furniture works in a small or narrow entryway?

A slim bench against the wall is ideal – it gives you a seat and shoe storage without blocking the corridor. Because ours are made to order, the width can be built to a tight space, and hooks above add storage without taking floor room.

How do I style an entryway bench?

Keep the top mostly clear – a plant or a tray and little else – store shoes neatly on the lower shelf, add a basket for clutter, and hang a mirror above. The restraint is what makes a small space feel calm rather than cramped.

Does a mid-century bench suit an older or period home?

Yes – a slim birch bench sits happily against mouldings and parquet, as our classic-hallway home shows. The honest, simple lines work alongside period detail rather than fighting it.

The short answer

Start with a bench – a seat and shoe storage in one – then dress it to your style: natural and bright, black and contemporary, boho and textured, or bold with colour. Add hooks, a basket, a mirror and a plant, and the hardest-working little room in the house becomes one you enjoy.
