A small wooden stool is the most quietly useful thing you can put in a room. It is a seat when you need one more, a bedside table where a full nightstand won't fit, a step to reach the top shelf, a perch for a plant, a stack of books or a speaker by the bath. This guide covers what actually matters when you buy a small mid-century modern stool — height, shape, load, materials — and which of ours fits which job.
What to look for in a small wooden stool
Four things separate a stool you keep for years from one you replace:
- Height. Around 40–45 cm is the everyday sweet spot — the same as a chair seat, so it works at a table, beside a bed or as a step. Taller pieces near 60–65 cm move into occasional-seating and extra-surface territory (more on that below).
- Shape. A round seat reads softer and slips into tight corners; a rectangular seat gives you more surface and a stable base for a tray, a book or a laptop.
- Load and stability. A real stool should take an adult's full weight without flexing or creaking. Ours are rated to 150 kg, with legs set at a slight angle so nothing wobbles when you shift your weight.
- Material. Solid birch plywood is cross-banded — each layer's grain runs across the next — which is why a thin plywood seat carries load that particleboard of the same thickness would not. It also shows its layered edge, the detail that ties it to the mid-century workshop tradition.
Round or bench: which small stool fits your space
Two shapes cover almost every use:
The Mid-Century Stool · Round is the classic small stool: a 32 cm birch seat at 41 cm high, on smooth splayed legs. It is the one you buy two or three of — light to move between rooms, low enough to disappear under a console, happy as a seat, a step or a plant stand.
The Mid-Century Bench Stool · 51 cm is the taller, wider option — a 51 × 37 cm seat at 64 cm, on our signature "ladder" legs with a shelf or crossbars beneath. The height suits a footrest by the sofa or a side seat, and the long legs carry small handrails you can lift it by, or rest a book on. Beyond seating: the small stool's second life
The reason a small stool earns its keep is that it rarely does just one thing. In our own customers' homes the same piece turns up as:
- A bedside table where a full nightstand won't fit — the flat top holds a lamp, a book and a glass of water.
- A plant stand that lifts a pot into the light.
- A step to reach a high shelf (this is where the 150 kg rating matters).
- A surface by the bath for a towel, a candle or a speaker.
- An extra seat that stores flat against a wall until guests arrive.
A short story on that last, quiet quality: one customer bought a round stool for her daughter, a harpist, who needed a seat that stayed dead silent while she played — no creak on every movement. The order came back for a second, in a different colour, for the daughter's teacher. Stability is the kind of thing you only notice when it's missing.
